Nine IT-BHU students booked for violence

IT-BHUAs many as nine students of B.Tech (final year) in the Institute of Technology (IT), Banaras Hindu University, were accused of indulging in violence and sent to the Lanka police station.
According to Prof SN Upadhyaya, director, IT-BHU, students living in one of the hostels of the university indulged in violence on Thursday night. Later, the members of the Proctorial Board handed them over to the police after their identification. “The university would take appropriate disciplinary action against them if they are found guilty of committing violence within hotel premises,” he assured.
The students were about to leave for their homes in a couple of days and were celebrating their last few moments at IT-BHU with liquor and snacks. Some old rivalry lead to this incident. Probably they thought to sort it out before they left BHU.
Meanwhile, the Lanka police have lodged an FIR against the accused students. A number of students are also believed to have received injuries in the incident.
It might be mentioned here that the students had taken their final examinations this year and most of them had been selected in the campus interview held recently at the university. But after the incident all nine of them have lost their offers.

London University deputy principal visit IT-BHU

The deputy principal (pro vice chancellor) St Georges University of London, Prof Sean Hilton arrived at BHU. He attended a meeting  at the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU).
During meeting he interacted with the faculty members and took note of the academic activities at the institute. Later he also visited the Faculty of Science and the Institute of Medical Science (IMS). Earlier, he called on the vice chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Prof. DP Singh. Before leaving the city he will also visit the Sir Sunderlal Hospital of BHU.

IIT Prof awarded by European Community

European Community, Belgium has awarded Prof. VK Srivastava, department of Mechanical Engineering, Institute of Technology, BHU, with Erasmus Scholar Award for 2008-2010 for expertise given to the staff and students of Technical University of Humburg, Denmark University and Portugal University in the area of advanced composite materials.
According to BHU spokesperson, Prof. Srivastava will organise all the research activities at Technical University of Humburg, Humburg, Germany. He is actively involved for the development of high temperature ceramic composites. The US Airforce, USA and JSPS, Japan have sanctioned international project to repair the defects of space shuttle during flight. The US airforce had always invited him under WOS programme to visit US Airforce Research Institute. Prof. Srivastava has also received various prestigious awards and fellowship to work at UK, Germany, France, Japan and the USA.

Student hangs herself at BHU during exams

BHUA girl hung herself from a pipe in the bathroom of an examination centre of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
Sheetlanjali was a student of BSc-III in Banaras Hindu University. She had gone to the examination centre at Mahila Mahavidyalaya on BHU campus with her father. Before the distribution of examination paper she left the hall for toilet. A peon was also sent with her. But when she did not come out of the toilet for over 15 minutes the peon called the invigorator. When the varsity staff tried to see inside the toilet through ventilator they were shocked to see that Sheetlanjali hanging from a pipe.
According to chief proctor Prof HCS Rathore, Sheetlanjali was suffering from depression and her treatment was also going on at the SSL Hospital of BHU. The MMV principal did not permit this girl to appear in the examination keeping her mental state in mind. But when her father requested the varsity authorities to allow his daughter to appear in the examination, the college had given permission with the condition that her father should be present at the examination centre. The body of girl was handed over to her family after postmortem.

Annual Day at IAS-BHU

Main GateThe Annual Day celebration and prize distribution ceremony of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), was  organised at Swatantrata Bhawan.
Director Shivraj Singh presenting the annual report highlighted the progress made by 11 departments and four units of the institute in teaching and research. He said that in research and development sector, the institute’s major emphasis had been towards conservation and sustenance of ecological foundation, essential for agricultural growth and supportive technology.
About 250 students received prizes and certificates of merit for their excellence in sports, athletics and cultural activities. Chief guest DS Rathore, eminent agricultural scientist and former vice-chancellor of Himanchal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Palampur, addressed the function that was presided ove by the BHU VC DP Singh.

BHU professor awarded

Director of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU, Prof Shiv Raj Singh has been awarded with the Best Educationalist Award by the New Delhi-based Indian Solidarity Council. Prof Singh was selected for this award for his outstanding achievements in the field of agriculture.

BHU plans programme on issues of social exclusion

The centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Banaras Hindu University, organised a three-day programme on  `Unstructured dialogue on issues of social exclusion’, from March 23 to 25.
According to the coordinator Prof. Ajit K Pandey, in the dialogue there was cross sectional representation of academicians, bureaucrats, police, NGOs, and the discussion would revolve around various issues like gender, caste, religious minorities, tribes and disabled persons.

BHU-PMT Postponed; distribution of seats revised

BHU LogoIn view of Parliamentary elections the BHU PMT-2009 Screening Test has been POSTPONED and will now be held on Thursday, May 28, 2009 between 2.30 PM and 5.30 PM at Varanasi, Delhi, Kolkata, and Hyderabad Centres. Further, PMT-2009 Main Test for MBBS course will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2009 between 9.30 AM and 12.30 PM at Varanasi Centre only. The distribution of seats in B.Pharm., Institute of Technology, selected through BHU PMT-2009 Screening Test has been revised and would be as follows : General – 17; OBC – 5; SC – 4; and ST – 2.

Agra Bibhushan award to Dr MK Agrawal, HOD ENT

Dr MK Agrawal, head of department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University has been recently awarded ‘Agra Bibhushan’ by Vice President of India, Hamid Ansari in New Delhi.
It may be mentioned here that the award constituted by All India Agrawal Sammelan, New Delhi has been given to only six persons in the country so far.

A new institute (IESD) to be established in the university

BHUThe Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is first such university in the country that introduces environmental calendar to sensitise its students and faculties towards a safer environment.

The environmental calendar is a part of BHU’s proposed institute of environment and sustainable development for which the University Grants Commission (UGC) has allocated Rs 7.50 crore. The IESD will be the fourth institute of BHU that already has Institute of Technology (IT), Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS).
“The mission of the proposed institute is to carry out teaching, research and extension relevant to India’s sustainable development,” said vice-chancellor Prof DP Singh. This educational effort will encourage changes in behaviour that will create a more sustainable future in terms of environmental integrity, economic viability and a just society for the present and future generations.
According to the V-C, the institute will work for a better understanding of critical scientific and social issues related to sustainable development goals. By doing so, the BHU is taking a lead in teaching and research in the field of environment and sustainability science. It will provide a common platform where faculty from different departments will work in interface areas leading to sustainable development.
The main research priorities set for the institute include global change and atmospheric pollution, natural resource management, sustainable agriculture, alternate energy resources and socio-economic and legal dimensions of sustainable development. The institute will contribute to inter-disciplinary education and research offering PhD, MSc, diploma and certificate programmes.

Seminar on urban governance in Department of Geography

Dept of GeographyThe department of Geography, organised a seminar on ‘urban governance and need for information system’ on  16th March 2009.

B Bhattacharjee member of National Disaster Management Authority, spoke about the problems of urbanisation. In his inaugural speech he said, urban structure was highly diversified due to which variety of problems have cropped up. In order to ensure good governance we need to employ information and communication technology especially in urban centres, he added. Bhattacharjee also highlighted the importance of geographical information system (GIS).

Youth-centric programme at BHU

Main GateThe two-day national conference on sports, physical education and yogic sciences in the present millennium would be organized at the faculty of arts, Banaras Hindu University, from 16th March.
Giving details of the programme during a press conference, organising secretary BC Kapri said the youth-centric program would focus on different aspects of physical education, including yogic sciences in promotion of sports. Some of the new research areas such as impact of junk food on physical activity would be also discussed during the programme, he added.
Over 150 experts and delegates from over a dozen universities of the country are likely to participate. Dronacharya awardee Shyam Sunder Rao and former international hockey player Prof Avinash Siddhu would also participate in the event.
