A young man's jovial countenance turns callous, on confronting his parents. The western culture is getting predominance in form of old people- villas; coming in way to care for these hapless old people (who only longs for a deservingly sweet behave by their child).

Disrespect for woman is at its exponential phase. In Mahabharata when Draupadi was stripped by Dushasana, lord Krishna came in way to protect her modesty. But in the so called "kalyuga" even god's supernatural power seems dwindled. Victimisation of women has become a common phenomenon .Their modesty is being plundered audaciously. The recent news of an Adivasi girl in Assam being stripped and her helpless and abortive endeavor to hide her modesty in the midst of public, puts us in oblivious bewilderment. The chastity of women is mendaciously besmirched. Recently, media also claimed its active participation in the blind race of throwing mud at others goodness. The divinity of the pristine relationship of a father and daughter (Aayushi murder case) was shamelessly trampled by media.

The land of Kabir, Guru Nanak and Moiuddin Chisti- the convoy of message of love, compassion and integrity is now replaced by commercial Gurus, whose veracity remains in question mark. If any individual desires Self-enlightment under their doubtful spiritual parasol, he has to be prepared to be fleeced economically.

The self proclaimed religious bodies like Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Shivsena, Madarsas etc. Promotes only religious extremism, with no sign of focus on moral enrichment of masses.

The degraded moralistic scenario has marred the taller claims of humans, as the highest civilized species on earth. Civilisation is a cumulative term that emphasizes more on inner beauty than the hypocritical beguile parameters of fashionable clothes, relishing delicacies, scintillating ornaments and fabricated demeanor.

The vitiating culture necessitates designation of a practical and result oriented moral science teaching methodology with a tangible blend of other subjects. Today's education system has a blind tendency of focusing only on academic subject matters, with no considerable emphasis on moral development of much malleable minded children. Inculcation of good 'sanskaras' is the first and foremost duty of education. Any level of scientific and technological development cannot inculcate it and this is indeed the panacea of majority of social maladies.

The prevailing vanity in humans about his achievements is a gross misconception. Morality is an indispensable need across the ladder of which only we can think of traversing in a utopian society. Sans it the vision of Rabindranath Tagore ----

"Where the world has not been broken into narrow domestic walls,
Where words come out from the depth of truth"

Will appear only a cry for the moon..........

The train halted at a rickety station, moreover the panorama outside the boundary of station was scintillating with natural beauty. The changing of autumn leaves, colorful flowers of gulmohar, cattle's grazing in green meadows and rustic redolence scattered by the sheded leaves, were advocating as well as burgeoning its idyllic splendour. Unexpectedly, that suave lady entered the coach with a kashmiri hand woven bag dangling from her girlish shoulder. Her appearance was so exquisite that I stared at her as if under the inexorable effect of an enchantment.Suddenly the dissonant sound of train's whistle broke my bewitchment and I corrected myself. Her body language gave me a slight inference of her well bred nature and I conjectured that she must have been brought up in a good society. She was hopefully looking for a space to place herself and luckily or unluckily, in that overcrowded coach only two seats were vacant, one was beside me and other in front of me. She gazed at me surreptitiously with the charming corner of her extremely beautiful eyes, perhaps to examine my disposition and hesitatingly preferred to sit in front of me. All passengers were captivated by her innocent beauty and the cacophony that usually prevails in a coach precipitated for a while. she opened her lovely bag, took out a bottle of water and drank it in a manner that the lump in her throat was clearly visible. It hinted that either she was too thirsty or a bit nervous.

Now the train was speeding up through a hilly region and I moved up my face from her and pretended to enjoy the beautiful picturesque of nature sprawling outside the glass window, but in reality I couldn,t resist my obsession to see at her frequently. This hum-drum went for a long time.I was desperately waiting for the conversational ice to melt but in vain.

At next station ticket collector with a miniature figure, and spurious grim countenance, started checking tickets .As he came near to our seat then as a ordinary human being he also got caught in the spell caste by her impeccable beauty and stood still for a moment in a state of oblivion.Perhaps he misunderstood me as a relative or something else of her and after a moment he turned back and moved for other compartment, without asking us for tickets. The girl also sensed this flawed attitude of ticket collector but remained silent.Anyway to the hell of my prediction the insipid atmosphere of silence never evaporated and eventually we reached our destination. The usual commotion spread and all passengers started pushing each other to get out of the coach. As a habitual traveler I waited for the squirm to pacify and that lady also waited passionately for the same. After the turbulence calmed i rose from my seat and approached towards gate .As I moved my first step on the platform a poignant scream caught my attention and immediately I turned back and rushed towards coach.

I was astonished to see that the lady was lying on the floor and it took me only a few seconds to understand that it was due to a banana pill thrown by some passengers.Anyway hesitatingly, I tried to help her by holding her cautiously and made her to place on seat.I observed a tiny lump on her polished forehead and some blood was also streaking from her beautiful lips. She tried to conceal her agony but failed in her motive.I told her curtly to have some first-aid treatment but she denied.I failed to persuade her as I sensed a bit of obduracy in her nature . So I took off my handkerchief, wiped off the blood and then asked her for any further help.

She reflected a cute smile even in this grave circumstance and thanked me by waving her hand .I was having an impetuous desire to ask her name but my habitual coyish nature prevented this desire of mine to be expressd. Any way, after disposing off the necessary formalities I came out of the station and hired a Tonga for kendriya-vidyalaya where i was to participate in an inter college essay writing competition .The programme was scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and my watch provided me 3 hours of time to rejuvenate the scattered mental status of mine .At 11.00 I reached at venue and after a short errand located my seat .It was in one corner of class room .The invigilator who was having a dreadful personality directed us gruffly with necessary instructions .His nose was in verisimilitude of a parrot and jaw was similar to a chimpanzee. He was continuously moving his mouth up and down, perhaps chewing something. The exam stared at scheduled time and as usual i plunged myself completely in the paper. Meanwhile I got a feeble notice that someone came and sat beside me but I was so engrossed at work that didn't attempted to move my head .when eighty percent of essay got completed then automatically my face turned to have little relaxation. As I turned, my mouth remained open with surprise and eyes got widened abnormally .The same girl was beside me .She looked at me very lovingly and broke my bewitchment by referring her pen towards my paper .I tried to control my self and re- concentrate at work but her close presence entangled me and compelled me to ride high on the fair bridge of fantasy.I decided to pursue her for refreshment after exam is over, her presence energised me and out of all fantasy I did well .After completion of paper I hurriedly rushed towards the gate, accosted her and persuaded her for light breakfast. We took fruit salad as I always prefer it than other things and she also showed her proclivity for it.

After finishing the light breakfast I made an endeavour to divert the motion of conversation to something impish. As our interaction was gaining acceleration meanwhile a lavish car stopped beside us ,its gate opened in a royal style and a young guy having a chocolaty appearance stepped out .His face depicted a tinge of pretentious innocence. As and when the girl caught a glimpse of him ,a malignant glint like those of a lizard on a wall looking voraciously for a prey occupied her face.I felt awkward at her transformed behaviour. She pushed me in a flagrant manner ,flanged her hand in air to greet him and rushed towards him with fabricated affection in her eyes.I stood dumbstruck ,gazing surprisingly towards them and felt a tug of pity on my gullible attitude. My all fantasies dissipated within a few seconds and the delicate thread of genuine desires broke callously. The people around were looking at me with pitiable eyes and I was finding a place to hide even shadow of myself.I was really terrified at the capricious nature of girl but out of all odds, smiled at my foolishness and vowed not to have second experience…………….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Penned by — Sachin kumar
copyright@ sachin kumar

Three consecutive letters in these columns (October 6, 13 and 20) emphasising the need for a student union at Banaras Hindu University have triggered a necessary debate.

It would be worth while considering the fatal aspects of a student union on the academic milieu of the campus, as evident from previous track record.

Student unions at JNU and other universities might be protecting the “democratic rights” of the students, but BHU has a very unsuccessful history of the student union, which existed here till 1997. Frequent breaching of university rules, demonstrations and protests, regular bunking of classes, misbehaving with and threatening professors, unauthorised and anti-social elements illegally occupying hostel rooms and unfair examinations were the norm when a student union existed on the campus.

It was the extremely vitiated academic environment that compelled the university administration to ban the student union.

Students from across the country come to BHU to seek education. Restoring the student union would degrade the academic ambience of the campus. At present a “student council” commensurate with a “student union” in terms of objective is working on the campus. It comprises student representatives from each faculty and is funded by the University for carrying out work related to students’ welfare.

Students are free to put their problems and queries to the authorities concerned through the “student council”, which are addressed by them in a healthy manner. The “student union” had the tendency to politicise and hype up trivial issues, thereby disturbing the academic environment on the campus.

There are certain flaws in the student council, but with slight modifications it would prove to be a better, healthier and more effective option. The success of the present set-up at BHU is evident from its academic excellence. Its management system is commendable and worth imbibing. It is my earnest request to those who advocate restoration of the student union to let peace, discipline and academic ambience prevail on the campus.

Has anyone thought about the unintended repercussions of the initiatives taken by the Supreme Court to stop ragging inside college campuses? I respect the steps taken by the honourable Court to stop ragging by categorising it as a cognizable offence.

But, as a final year student at BHU, I have observed certain unintended repercussions of the same in the form of an undefined sense of fear among the senior students – so much so that they shun even the shadow of newly admitted students.

The fanatical involvement of the university administration, on the instructions of the Supreme Court, and its sceptical attitude towards the senior students, who are unreasonably interrogated, has scared the senior students so much that they are reluctant to even look at the freshers. I am afraid these restrictions will have a perceptible impact on the freshers’ academic performance and overall development.

I think the Court should have taken steps to ensure a healthy interaction between the newcomers and the senior students so that the former can feel at home in the unfamiliar new campus environment. My batch-mates and I owe much of the credit for our satisfactory academic performance to our seniors, who acted as caring guides for us. But now with the mortifying interference of the university administration on the pretext of “curbing ragging”, I feel that sharing such a relationship with the fresh batch is impossible.

This is a desperate call for HELP. I graduated from Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Kamachha, Varanasi with Bachelor of Arts (BA, English) and presently have applied to get admission in Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at University of Calgary, Canada. The University of Calgary wants to compare the course outline/syllabus of my past undergrad degree to qualify me for admission. Despite my best efforts, I could not find a copy of the syllabus from BHU for 1984-86. I contacted the registrar and the librarian at BHU via e-mail but they did not reply back to me. When my friend personally contacted the University officials, they told him that the University destroyed all the old syllabi. Presently, I have no way to find where can I find the required syllabus. CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME TO LOCATE A SYLLABUS OR A PHOTOCOPY IN BHU for the said years, I will be very greatful. I am also willing to pay for the syllabus and for the cost of making it available to me. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!! You can reach me at sanjeev5@telus.net or call me at 780-907-6757.

THANKS

As far as I remember, stem cells were actually the udder cells of the mother in case of Dolly - the first cloned sheep. Most probably in humans too the case must be somewhat similar...
